Subject: The first week & 3 month review (re-written for brevity)
I monitored Regis sleeping for 3 days. On the morning of the third day while I was out buying supplies I returned home to find him gone. He broke down the back door and took his old truck. In a panic I searched the neighborhood for him. When I didn't find him I returned home distressed. He returned shortly after with his truck full of paint. He charged the purchase to the business. My heart grew with anticipation that he’d be able to communicate what he’d learned. Since this moment of supreme surprise and delight, I have fallen into dread. He paints and he paints and he paints and he paints. Endlessly, for hours. It’s abstract and foreign to my eyes. It’s full of pain and loss. Then he weeps and weeps and convulses. He sleeps where he drops. He does not let me carry him to bed so I lay a blanket over him. He eats little but rice and dates. Then he paints and he paints and he paints as if his life depends upon it. He does not fill the room with his art. He shows no desire to share his images. He paints over the same canvas over and over and over and then he sets it on fire in the backyard. It is not my place to interrupt this circle. I acknowledge that he may have learned something that I have not. This cycle has been 3 months now and I feel more and more helpless by the day. I'm afraid that our venture has reached a dead end and I have lost another man to an experience we don't understand.
